Church History

Mt. Calvary Baptist Church

On the second Sunday in September in 1954, the following people withdrew from The Friendship Baptist Church in LaFayette by letter: Bro. Walker Trimble, Bro. Curtis Owens, Sis. Ella Driver, Sis Amentha Calloway, Sis. Margaret Martin, Bro. Garthene Rae, Sis. Abria Hill, Sis. Janie Trimble, Sis. Annie Ratchford and Sis. Margaret Owens.

They began meeting as a mission at the home of Sis. Aldora Cobb. These meetings were continued for approximately six weeks. With much prayer and meditation, they decided to organize a church.

On Tuesday, November 9, 1954, the church organized at the Freeman Chapel Methodist Church in LaFayette, Alabama. Reverand E. D. Slaughter served as advisor. The following ministers were serving on the advisory council: Rev. T. J. Askew and Rev. E. D. Slaughter. The mission was then named the Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church by Sis. Abia Hill.

Sister Aldora Cobb continued to open the doors of her home for worship service on the second and fourth Sunday. Rev. E. D. Slaughter was elected as the first pastor of the church. His salary was set at fifteen dollars each Sunday. The following officers were elected. Sis. Amentha Calloway, church clerk; Sis. Ella Driver, church treasurer; and Sis. Abia Hill, Sunday School Superintendent. Four deacons were borrowed from area churches. The deacons were Deacon A. L. Martin from Sardis Baptist Church, Deacon C. S. Calloway from White Hall Baptist Church, Deacon Mahlaard Boyd from Macedonia Baptist Church and Deacon Jackson Crim from White Hall Baptist Church.

A committee was formed to locate land for building a church. The committee sent three trustees to purchase land. The trustees were Bro. Curtis H. Owens, Bro. Garthene Rae, and Bro. Walter Trimble. The committee located land on the Cusseta Road, which is now Martin Luther King Drive in Lafayette. On November 22, 1954 they purchased an estimate of two acreage in land from the Tucker brothers at a cost of one hundred dollars.

The ground-breaking service for Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church was December 1954. Mr. Major Willis was the builder for the church. Bro. Garthene Rae and Mr. Albert Finley completed the work on the interior. The first pulpit was built by Mr. Albert Finley at a cost of eight dollars.

The members marched into the sanctuary for worship service on July 24, 1955. The first revival service began July 25, 1955. Dianne Owens, Isaiah Brock Jr. and Helen Brock were the first candidates baptized at the church in 1955.

In September 1955, the Mount Calvary Baptist Church was accepted into the Bowen East Missionary Baptist Association at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Lanett, Alabama. Reverend B. F. Patrick was the moderator. The church became affiliated with the North East State Convention and the Alabama State Convention in 1956. October, Bro. Walter Trimble was elected as musician for the church.

Reverend E. D. Slaughter served as pastor for twenty-four years. Under his leadership was Bro. Walter Trimble, Bro. M. E. Crook, Bro. Will Henry Holloway, and Bro. Isaiah Brock were ordained as deacons. Bro. Jimmie Frank Heard was licensed to preach. The church also moved to full time morning worship service.
